Any ideas?

For the last month or so I've been feeling completely exhausted. Not just tired, but the kind of exhaustion you feel right to your bones - when you wake up & think you could just go right back to sleep for the rest of the day. At first I put it down to having visitors etc, but for the last while I've been getting LOTS of sleep & still been feeling like this. I started thinking about it & realised I was feeling exactly the same last year at this time. I remember going for months thinking I had something seriously wrong with me ( you know how we who are medically trained are always the worst worriers) - then it just seemed to go away. Anyway after thinking & praying about it, I think I know the culprit.....

No not these...(bear with me I think it's effected my sense of humour as well!!!LOL)

Rather these....

Our beautiful wattle - that are coming out in flower everywhere around Sunnyside.

I was so excited to see them flower, it feels like they are a little glimpse of spring, but hey they sure cause 'winter' in my sinuses!!!

Of course just outside our bedroom window is this:

I was wondering if anyone knew of any natural remedies for allergies? (besides of course cutting down all the trees )?!?!?!

Hi Renata,
I used to suffer terrible sinusitis and allergies each spring, no wattle here but lots of flowering gums which started to affect me after a few seasons of exposure. I tried all manner of remedies, tablets from the chemist, natural and homeopathic tablets, mixtures and sprays. Then I heard about the netty pot... have you ever seen one?.. They look kinda rude with their long spout! You use them to flush out your sinuses with salt water. It worked for both me and my husband! I had tried flushing out my sinuses before just using a small jug but the design of the netty pot meant the water really reached the back of the sinuses. I had to flush daily at first but after a while I noticed I was suffering less episodes. These days I rarely suffer and if I do get a bout the netty pot comes out. I bought mine at our local wholefoods store... had been searching for one for ages then spotted them there one day. They have an online store if you cannot find one locally. Cost about $30 but considering what I spent on remedies each spring it was money well spent. The only health supplement I use is olive leaf extract and I think this may have helped too. I also have a lot more energy these days since the sinus went away! Hope this is helpful!

Yikes! That could really be a problem. Other than allergy shots, over the counter medicines and prayer I don't know what else might work. I hope you find something and that it works for you fast! Maybe you could talk to a natural healer? They might be able to tell you some remedies.

Sorry , no help from me, I have heard good things about those netty pots though or just a simple nasal flush from the chemist.
I hope you find relief soon.... The trees are gorgeous!

I hope you dont mind but i stole that cool widget you have at the bottom of your blog ;-)

You could always try to stop breathing, then you wouldn't breathe in the pollen... but I'm assuming that's not really an option.

I have found the Neti Pot really hard to use if you can't get at least some airflow through both nostrils. It just backs up in your sinuses and starts flowing down your throat. We did a post or two on the blog after our purchase of one. NeilMed / Nasaflo makes the cheapest one I found in Australia. www.neilmed.com They also make other sorts of nasal irrigation stuff.

I did try it with my sinus dramas over the weekend but I was far too clogged for it to work. I can't find my homeopathy book at the moment sorry.

The wattle outside the boys bedroom does the same to me but thankfully it only seems to be if I am in their room or out amongst the trees. It's a pity they are such pretty trees isn't it?

Sorry to hear you're so tired, renata- me too, but I know my culprit is a teething baby!
Seeing a naturopath may be the best bet, especially if it's an ongoing problem. The trees are so beautiful!!

Some horticultural experts claim that wattle cannot be the problem because the pollen is very heavy and falls to the ground close to the tree. They say the allergy must be caused by something else flowering at the same time. It may be worth investigating, but my money is on the wattle being the culprit.
At least you have much prettier wattle than the NQ varieties. They are soooo disappointing.

Renata, I agree about the neti-pots - I tried one for my frequent respiratory infections, and it really did help. I also saw on television an interview with a doctor, who said that so many illnesses can be prevented simply by keeping the nasal passages moist.

Renata,

I've got nuthin' for your sinuses. I suffer from seasonal allergies, too, and for all my naturalness, I have succumbed to heavy drugs.

Anyway, you asked a while ago about the quads/bikes. We got the first kids sized quad when our oldest was 5/6 and then started the two oldest on dirt bikes when they were 6 and 8, on 50cc and 70cc bikes.

:) I know, we're crazy!

I'm going to have to find out more about these neti pots. Very interesting.
Wattles are just so beautiful, it's such a shame they cause trouble.
I hope you get to the bottom of it all and you can get re-energised. Sinusitis does zap you of your get up and go.

Allergies are the pits! Mine are worse in the spring and fall too.

I have been having "fresh juice" every morning and I can not believe the difference it has made for me. I can cut onionS and not even have watery eyes. Use to be I would suffer with my sinuses for hours after cutting part of an onion.
Certain hair/body products that are over scented still bother me. But its for a short time not for three days like it use to be. Or to the doctor for meds!!! :(
I can now dodge down the detergent aisle at the store without getting sick!
I have banned certain brands of body washes and deodorants from the house as they set off my sinuses on a rampage for weeks!
The fresh juice is working for me so I am going to continue using it. I also take Probiotics. Trying to build up my immune system as the antibiotics from sinus infections has wore them down.

Hi Narn, you poor thing.....I hope you find some relief. My suggestion is try 'Nature's Own' Triple Strength Garlic + C Horseradish. They say it can help with allergies. Are your gums flowering too????? (gum trees my dear, not the ones in your mouth!!! lol).
Hope the snow gives you some relief.....

Sorry to hear you're feeling so tired - have the wattle been flowering for 2 months over your way? They have just started here.

I don't have any natural remedies, but having suffered from sinus problems all my life I can recommend Rhinocort nasal spray. Once I had it in my system (used it every day for 2 weeks) I found I only needed to use it 2 or 3 times a week to keep my sinuses clear.

Hope you can find something to help you.
