The overdue snow trip post!

Monday, August 23, 2010

I know it's been a while since we embarked on our snow adventuring holiday (well weekend away), but since my adoring fans have been asking where the pictures are    Zai wants Grandma to see how well he skied, I thought it was time while I could still officially call it winter,  to post about our snow trip from July.

Over here in Australia the majority of the population lives where it doesn't snow.  In fact an annual snow trip is something of an Aussie tradition.  We have some wonderful, motivated friends who organised a group from church to go this year.

What a good lookin' bunch of people!!!!
(This was taken at a beautiful park in Tumut )

When we arrived at our accommodations at the bottom of the mountain (Talbingo), the Sunnyside family quickly unpacked (do you know I should be called Speedy - gonzNata) & decided to head off for a walk to look at the lake.....

It started to rain while we were gone. Can you say Brrrrrrr...

Jud & Eli were so excited to be tobogganing this year - our favourite babysitter was also going with us & hates skiing so she offered to mind the boys - only one ended up in the "lost & found children's" booth - pretty good really!  Thankfully he has an identical twin brother, so identification wasn't a problem without either parent there ( there's a mother of the year award moment!)!

Of course we told them the toboggans were for the snow, but they couldn't wait to try them out on a nearby grassy slope  & let me tell you it was heaps of fun (uh hm  not that I know of course!!)

Dave is the most patient man I know & he used every little bit he had on the day helping children with their skiing!!  Oh & guess what happened about 10 seconds after this picture was taken (hint - look where Zai's pole is & the angle of the hidden child's skis)

Since I only had a dodgy camera with me, my friend stepped in & got some lovely pictures of the kids with hers.  Here is Ellie in the igloo someone had built for the kids!

And here's our little skier - he is so good he even was attempting jumps!

Ellie did a lesson as well, but couldn't quite get the whole concept, so I ended up spending the afternoon skiing with her between my legs (it was fun, although I certainly could feel my shoulders by the end of the day).  At first I was a bit put out about it (since we were only allowed on the beginners slope - not exactly riveting fun), however once I thought about the special moments & memories we were making, I realised that my afternoon was not being wasted at all.  Once all the kids are grown & gone, I'll be able to go on any slope I want!

What a lovely weekend, full of fun & friendship & laughter!  We are blessed to be part of a church who is so welcoming & inclusive of us ex-"city folk"!

May you have a lovely Monday

Looks like you all had a fantastic time. It has been a while since I last saw snow and have only ever been skiing once in my life which was a nightmare because it was blizzard conditions and I lost a contact lens! Skiing 'blind' in whiteout conditions - I swore never again but one winter we should consider taking the family to the snow.

Looks and sounds like you all had a nice time. Even if you didn't get to do much skiing on your own Renata you certainly have a great attitude about it. I have to constantly remind myself that these days with littlies will be gone all too quickly and I may well wish them back again.

Hi Narn, Tell Zai - I was very, very impressed to see him ski-ing - wow! Tell him well done! It looks like you all had an amazing time and lots of fun - isn't God's creation wonderful. Love the igloo and of course the sledding on the grass. Only another couple of years and you'll all be flying down the slopes! So glad to see the pictures.
Lots and lots of love to all the happy skiers - Mum xxxxxxxxxxxxx

What a fantastic outing! Glad you all had such fun.
I was speaking with a lady who is a ski instructor last week and she was all for spending time as a family skiing. She said lessons are great for getting you going, but what kids will remember is being with their parents and the memories of that. With that she taught me a few tricks to help impress Rowan with :) They then failed to impress cause I fell over, but ah, the memories. So you most certainly are right about the time you spent with Ellie.
(we've been in NZ the last few weeks)

I love what you said about spending the afternoon with Ellie. Sometimes I forget to have that attitude and you can help me remember. And she won't even have to be all grown before you get to ski any slope. She won't want to be between your skis in 6 years even!
