Silly, Silly Cow.....LOL

Monday, May 16, 2011

I went out this morning to hang out the freshly washed clothes on our good old clothesline when I happened to glance into the neighbouring paddock where Miss Bessy (our almost ready to be put into calf jersey cow) lives.  As I looked at her I thought she looked rather strange, but from the distance couldn't pick out why.  As soon as she saw me heading her way she came straight over... well I just couldn't help it - I was laughing too hard to help her for many minutes...

Somehow the silly thing had managed to get an old plastic chair from the hay shed caught around her neck .  The poor thing was trying her best to continue eating & drinking, but it was so difficult & the funny positions she would arch her neck into just to get that one tiny nibble of the fresh grass was rather hilarious.

Of course me being...well me...the first thing I did was grab my camera ( I promise you that in a true emergency I would skip this step - even if it would make a good blog post ;)  ) I then began my quest to remove her unusual neck decoration.
Well I pushed & pulled that darn chair - I tried twisting it every which way & then I tried twisting poor ol' Bess every which way (well as much as a grown cow will allow you).  She quickly got sick of this manhandling &decided to head off for green pastures complete with  "necklace" attached.

I realised that my technique needed a little more refining & went to Dave's garage to try & find some kind of tool that would cut through that plastic (as if I have any idea about any tools).  After finding a couple of what I thought may be possibilities I coaxed Miss Bess back to the fence.  The first tool didn't work, but the saw (that little Eli had recommended - it is so useful having sons) did.  Now I'm not very good at sawing - in fact it's a wonder I passed manual arts in grade 8 (when it was mandatory).  My 5 year old sons are better at sawing than I am, but somehow I managed to make a cut into the plastic (probably because it was actually plastic & not wood).  Unfortunately the sound was a little too much for Bessy & she decided she'd had enough for one day - I did manage to grab the saw out of the cut just as she rushed away (I was worried she would be hurt had I left it there as it was rather close to her ear - I really didn't wish to deal with an amputation as well - imagine the call to the vet then " ...well I have a cow with a chair lodged around it's neck & I've just managed to remove her ear as well..." ).  Knowing this idea was going to work I decided I couldn't leave her in this quandary all day & had better go to her aid so I jumped the fence & grabbed hold of the chair as hard as I could.  Well as Miss Bessy struggled somehow I managed to cut through the rest of the arm of that chair & finally she was free (complete with ear intact)!
Well let me tell you that badly mannered Bessy didn't even stop to say "thank you" (or "moo moo") she just looked at me with cold eyes as if I was the one who had got her into this position in the first place and walked away.

So just a warning if you happen to be creeping into our hay shed trying to steal a mouthful of the delicious triticale hay stored there - you may regret it!!!!

Gotta love it! Our Scottish Highlander managed to get her head stuck inbetween the spaces on a pallet that was standing up. I had to get a pry bar and take the pallet apart to get her out.

Hey Narn,
Poor little Bessy, she looks so innocent with her big brown eyes. (Do you think her eyes are the same as Nita's?)
Have a lovely day, and be careful with the saw,
luv

Ha Ha, poor lil Bessy! Certainly glad you didn't amputate her hear!!! I hope she's forgiven you by now for all the trouble you caused her!
Btw, love the music, it's very nice. Who is it?
Just had a lovely chat to Aunty Lorry - she's off to the States next week - visiting NY, Niagra Falls, flying over the Grand Canyon and that sort of thing. She's very excited!
Better go. Great to see we can comment again. So glad you've got nice practical sons (must take after Grandad). Okay, so they might have a practical dad and Grandpa & Nana too. Give them all an enormous hug. Love to you all

This cow and her encounter with the chair was so funny; I just had to share it with a group of homeschoolers. These 3 - 5th graders had come together to take a standardized test. You and your darling bovine lightened their day of intense concentration.

Thank you.

Hi TJ - I'm so glad it lightened their day. We're doing testing with Zai at the moment also (grade 3 - NAPLAN test). I hope your students do very well!
Blessings
Renata:)

Have a great Sunday
