Really ducky...

I wasn't meant to get ducks....

We had only gone to the markets to get pigs...we'd thought about pigs...we'd dreamed about pigs...we'd even planned for pigs, but ducks... they weren't even in the equation!

He'd mentioned them once only... he'd said they were dirty animals that were a pest...he'd never said anything else.  They just weren't ever thought of again. !

And now here I was coming home with a small box filled with 2 ducklings.
What would he think?

It's not really my fault, as I walked past their cage they seemed to call to me.  They must have known that I had a thing for babies ~ all kinds of babies... their little eyes beckoned me, their little bodies ~ already beginning to grow white feathers from their newborn yellow fuzz somehow seemed to appear like they needed a good home... in a place called....well something like Sunnyside (I'm sure it was something like that they were quacking)  :)    I ignored it ...after all it was only that morning that he'd spoken in the the less than complimentary manner about their kind, so I walked straight on past.

But my children.... I think they have a little bit of their mother in them ( OK maybe I should say a whole lot ~ after all we have quite the petting zoo here).  They stopped, they felt it ~ they turned as a group & it only took one look & a "Oh Mum, look at how cute they are".   I found myself handing over the money ~ it's not like he said I wasn't allowed to get them...

I began to think ~ how can I convince him?  Hmmm.... duck eggs ~ we'll buy them on the precept of wanting to have farm fresh duck eggs ( after all doesn't every farm want those??).   I chose a drake & hen ( that way  we may get more ducklings & there really isn't anything cuter.... except baby chicks.,.. oh & calves, lambs, piglets & of course human babies).  Excitement radiated from the children ~ 2 acquisitions in one day.  More animals to join the Sunnyside family :)

We told him we had a gift for him ~ a surprise ~ he took it in his stride (after almost 12 years of marriage he knows me well).  As for the ducks ~ they've made themselves right at home.  The hens have adjusted to these newest invaders of their henhouse,  they seem to not mind that they swim in the water & take up one of the nesting boxes at night.  After all they really are cute!!

So come a few more months we will have our very own  Sunnyside fresh duck eggs ~ after all that's what we got them for ~ isnt' it ?

Oh We LOVED having a Duck... Yes!! we only had one..We inherited him with 2 geese and 2 pigmy goats...He was the Sweetest and Cutest little guy...He was blind and had grown up with the 2 Geese and he would act and talk just like them.... He was so terribly precious...And it was such a wonderful teaching opportunity that the children had... They all can't wait to have another Duck or Ducks... :) Have a beautiful week Renata

My Ducky would be so jealous. She has been wanting ducklings for so long now. My mum keeps ducks and chickens. I didn't like the taste of duck eggs, but mum uses them for cooking and if they're big enough she could substitute one duck egg for 2 chook eggs in most recipes.

So you didn't take a photo of the pig? (Not as cute as a duckling, I imagine!)

I've done the same Renata - we were only meant to be buying chickens but were asked 'You wouldn't like some ducks as well?' And so we came home with our tribe of chooks and ducks including Obi Wan Kenobi and various other characters from Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. The ducklings were super cute at first when they were all fluffy but they grew up and joined the dark side becoming evil hungry monsters that kept escaping and pooping all over my patio. Muscovy duck poop is yucky, especially when you tread in it with bare feet! Only thing those ducks were good for were catching blow flies! I was starting to look up duck recipes when they were taken from us by a duck assassin that bumped one off every night! The only duck I was sad to lose was 'Mother Duck' but she was not from the evil clan of muscovy but a mallard that thought she was a dog and she was most definitely the leader of the pack and she did keep those muscovies in line until they became too big and began bossing her around!
Hey, there is a great article in the last Organic Gardener magazine on keeping pigs and after reading it you might think it was a wise move coming home with ducks instead! Escaping pigs are a whole different matter ... worth reading just for the story!

Oh Renata! Your newest babies are adorable! You made me laugh, because what you wrote sounded just like me trying to pass up some adorable duckling or baby chick or bunny or.... all it takes is the tiniest bit of encouragement from my children and... we have new members to add to our menagerie. Ducks are messy, but you are right there isn't much cuter!

Ooooohhhhhh, they are sooooo cute! I'm not fussed on the taste of duck though - people either love them or hate them. Dad is now making lots of comments about Peking Duck and remind Cor about the ducks (cooked) hanging up in the shops in Hong Kong!

Anyway, have a lovely, lovely week. Lots and lots of love to the darlings xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am the same way! But so is my husband, and he is actually the one who brought home 2 ducklings on a whim. We lost our boy, but the girl is still going laying everyday at almost 2 years old- she lays better than the chickens, and is very entertaining to watch.

That's similar to how we got our ducklings when I was a girl...four ducklings, a "free" sign, and four children's pleading faces looking up at my parents...and we loved our ducks!

Ours were all drakes so no duck eggs for us. They are great in baking though! Hopefully we can get some girl ducks soon. Probably after Christmas .
