Bessy is back!!!!

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

I've always been one of those people who've thought it strange that people would love on their pets just so.  I always cared for our dogs, put up with our cats & enjoyed my chickens, but I was never expecting to actually care so much for a 'pet' that I would actually miss her while she was away, but that is exactly how it was with our beautiful jersey cow Bessy.  Since she was a calf we knew that the time would come when it was necessary for her to go & visit a bull.  The whole reason we even got her was to supply us with milk & although we are slightly more than hobby farmers we still need to utilise our resources & to feed a cow that is nothing more than paddock decoration is neither practical or being a good steward of what we have.

However  I wasn't expecting me, the ever practical, ever logical person, to miss her...
I missed her beautiful big brown eyes that watch out for you to go outside to hang the laundry & then she beckons you down to her paddock fence for a brief hello!  Her paddock looked so bare this summer. I missed her warm soft body that leans as close to you as possible & loves your arms being stretched as far around her as you can.  I missed her listening ear that doesn't judge or try & solve your problems, but just listens as you peacefully stroke her (OK I'm sure she actually cared as much as a fencepost would about what I was really saying).  Maybe it's because we went through one of the most difficult times we ever  have while she was away...

I'm not sure if she was happy to be back ~ I think she missed the other cows she was in with!

But now she is back & we are so excited!

She seemed to remember this crazy box that makes clicking noises :)

So the countdown to spring has begun.  We are hoping she is pregnant & she certainly has calmed down a whole lot which is a really good sign. The earliest she would calve is September, but it is possible right into December as she was away for 4 months.  We are thinking of all the milking equipment we need & stalls to build, cow to train to come to the right place at the right time  etc. etc. etc.  What a fun project over winter this will be!  I am so looking forward to this new adventure here at Sunnyside!!!

So I'd better go ~ I'm off to pet her again & whisper in her ear how much we missed her & how glad we are to have her home again and to please, please behave herself when we go to milk her (I've heard stories of how very difficult it can be & our Miss Bess certainly has her own ideas about things at time ~ I figure if I get in early...).
 Softy aren't I?

Have a wonderful day

Glad to hear Bessie is home! Her antics in the barn-yard were always so fun to read about. And since we simply don't have room were we live now for large livestock, I enjoyed reading about her and daydreaming she was mine. :-)

And just wanted you to remember that He knows all about your difficult times, and He really does hear your heart's cry! And I am praying for you daily, dear friend!!

Your cow is beautiful, I feel the same about our cow Bella, I miss her when we are away! Bella is due to calve in September (we had her inseminated as we didn't know any suitable bulls), it will be interesting to see how we both go!
