Our 10 favourite chapter books for girls...

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

I grew up in a family of five girls, four of which loved to read ( often & always). The other one....well she's more a 'doer' than a 'reader', but that's OK!   One of my favourite memories  from childhood was when Mum would read aloud to us.   I continue to love this time time, although now it's me who's reading & my daughter who is listening. I love sharing some of those same books we read so many years ago  with her as we cuddle up together under soft blankets.

We both enjoy when we find new books to add to our 'girls' collection as well (we are quite the minority in this household)!  Here is a list of 10 of our  favourite chapter books & book series that we compiled together to share with you:

The Complete "Anne of Green Gables"
1. Anne of Green Gables (affiliate link) (the whole series of books) by L.M. Montgomery
Who doesn't love this series of books about the girl with her 'carrot' hair & her entertaining family!  I enjoyed reading these as a girl, but I LOVED rereading these as an adult!

Little House on the Prairie
2. Little House on the Prairie (affiliate link) (series) by Laura Ingalls Wilder
These books tell the true story of Laura & her family as settlers in the late 1800's in America.  They are tales of hardship & heartache, fun & love.  The family togetherness is inspiring & her gentle storytelling will keep everyone enthralled.

The Railway Children
3.  The Railway Children (affiliate link)by E.Nesbit
This book is a sweet book of four children who move to a cottage near the railway in England & their adventures.  Written in the early 1900's it is considered a children's classic.  We agree!

Little Women and Good Wives
4.  Little Women  (affiliate link) by Louisa May Alcott
A sweet tale of four sisters with lively imaginations, big hearts & great ambitions.  Written in the late 1800's it profiles the often difficult yet thoroughly entertaining lives of these fictitious young women.  One all young ( & slightly older) women should read for themselves!

Look Out, Lancaster County: 4-In-1 Story Collection
5. Rachel Yoder (affiliate link)( the whole series of 8 books ) by Wanda E. Brunstetter
Rachel is an Amish girl with a penchant for getting into trouble ~ often & always!  She is a loveable, mischevious, busy, kindhearted girl & will soon become your friend!  These books are set in Amish America in modern times. I love how strongly the multi-generational family bond is portrayed . You can't help but admire it & love these books!

The Adventures of Milly-Molly-Mandy
6. Milly, Molly, Mandy (affiliate link) (series) by Joyce Lankester Brisley
These are just the sweetest tales of the life of a young girl in the 1920's in a small village in rural England.  These books are treasures & are filled with the gentle adventures of little Milly, Molly Mandy (yes, she has three names).  Girls of all ages will love these enchanting stories, but they are particularly perfect as read alouds for younger girls!
Moody Reading Book Special
7. Moody family  (the series) by Sarah Maxwell
This series of books is much loved here by both the boys & girls ( & I know they made the boys list as well).   These are the story of the Moody children who love the Lord & try to serve him at all times.  These books will inspire your children to live a more Godly life & honour their parents as well!

8. The Barn Chronicles (the series) by Rosie Boom
A book list isn't complete without this series ( & again I've included them in both the boys & girls list).  Their tattered pages tell the tale of well loved, well read books here at Sunnyside!  These are the true stories of the Boom Family when they moved into an old barn on their acreage and the adventures they subsequently have had.  You can't help but fall in love with this  homeschooling family & be inspired by their fun & loving natures!

Cul De Sac Kids
9.  The Cul-de-sac kids (affiliate link) ( the series of books) by Beverley Lewis
Ellie was particularly eager to include this series as she has read & reread these again & again.  These cover the adventures of a group of children who all live in the same Cul-de-sac of houses.  It explores many topics throughout the books & always from a Christian perspective.  Set in modern day America, these books are simply written & the large font & short chapters make them perfect as first chapter books for emerging readers.

The Story Girl
10. The story girl  (affiliate link) (the series) by L.M Montgomery
Another classic book I loved as a child. It has been rewritten as a series of shorter books by Barbara Dovoll and these are what we read.    These are the sweetest tales of a girl who has a gift for storytelling and her visiting cousins.  It beautifully entwines both the cousins' adventures & the stories of the Story Girl!  Sweet, well written & much loved.  These books happily grace the shelves of our book case!

“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.”
