Review Crew ~ A+ Interactive MATH (Online Homeschool Edition)

Maths is without a doubt my very favourite subject to teach.  I have always enjoyed maths because it just makes sense, so teaching it to my children has been such a joy... well except in the case of one of my children.  For Miss Ellie it's been a time of tears & frustration up until now.  So when I was asked to review the year 4  Online Homeschool Edition of  A+ Interactive maths from A+ Tutorsoft, Inc  I was so excited.  At that point I was after anything that would help our daughter  with her mathematics.   After using it for 6 weeks now I can confidently say that A+ Interactive MATH is the best thing that has happened to Ellie's mathematics education (yes, sometimes even maths-geek mothers can't get through to their children as well as other teaching methods can)!

I have been very frustrated over the years with different maths curriculum.  I have found them to be jumpy & disjointed in their teaching, often just brushing over topics without accomplishing full mastery by the student. As a maths lover I find this annoying as I want my children to have a complete understanding of the different maths concepts.  The reason I appreciate  A+ Interactive MATH so much is because it is nothing like these other programs.

A+ Interactive MATH has programs for 1st through to 6th grade, pre-algebra ( 7th grade) & algebra 1.   Once registered with A+ interactive MATH Online Homeschool edition, both the parent & child are each given their own login.  This allows the parent to set work for their student and/or  monitor their progress.  The child begins each topic area with a quick review of what they have previously learnt. This is then tested with a quiz & then built upon in a logical, progressive order building mastery & confidence.  There are 16 topics covered in grade 4 & each topic has from 2 to 13 different subtopics depending upon the requirements for the grade .  Upon launching the program, the child will chose the subtopic they are up to & watch the  teaching podcast before completing an interactive quiz .  Once this is done, the student can print out a certificate where their results are recorded.   There is also a timed, online exam for each completed topic that tests the student's knowledge retention in that area.  This is so important to make sure the child has a complete understanding of the topic.  Being online, it is scored for you which is a bonus for the busy, home schooling mother! Alternatively, the worksheets & exams are able to be printed out.  A weekly report of work completed is available for you if required.
The certificates Ellie prints out daily after completing her work.  I then add them to her portfolio.

We were asked to review the online homeschool edition for 4th grade.   I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ellie could complete this program entirely independently, while I could easily monitor her progress.  We found this program extremely simple to use for both student & parent.  Our standard was that if she scored less than 85% she would revise the teaching again & retry the quiz. I expected her to complete a subtopic each school day & she was even happy to do this throughout the last weeks of the summer holidays!! After she completed the quiz she would print out her certificate & show it to me.

Australian Students:
My main concern with using an international maths program is that we are required to use the national curriculum here in Australia & I wondered how it would match up.  To check this I obtained the scope & sequence of the  national curriculum & matched it up with the scope & sequence of A+ Interactive maths. Whilst there were a few minor differences, I was pleasantly surprised to find that A+ Interactive maths covered the majority of the topics required.  Some supplementation is required in the area of money as it only covers the US currency.  Measurement & Area cover both the Imperial & Metric Systems which pleasantly surprised me.  Overall A+ interactive maths does an excellent job of presenting subject matter in a logical, understandable way.  I would happily recommend this as a curriculum for Australian students & will continue to use it for mine.
